Course Aims-
1. To know the chemistry of cement, silicates, limes and water
2. To learn the basic concepts of polymer (some essential materials of construction)
3. To know the cause and prevention of corrosion
4. Chemistry of some specific civil engineering materials
5. Impact of industry on environment
Course outline
Chemistry of materials: Chemistry of cement, silicates and limes. Physical and chemical properties of water. Different types solutions, concentration units. Chemical equilibrium and thermo chemistry.
Polymers: Different types of polymers and their properties, polymer degradation, elastomers and composite materials.
Chemical corrosion of construction materials: Introduction to chemical corrosion, corrosion of metals and alloys in dry and wet environments, mechanism of corrosion, atmospheric and soil corrosion and their protective measures.
Chemistry of environmental pollution: Environment and its characteristics, chemistry of toxic metals and non-metal pollutants, analytical techniques, used in the determination of pollutants, chemical concept of DO, BOD, COD and threshold odor number, chemistry involved in water treatment plants.
Specific Examples for Civil Engineering:
PET bottles, PVC pipes cones, uPVC doors/windows, HDPE pipes/sheets etc.
Health problems with different metal pollutions (Arsenicosis, Minamata diseases etc.); DO, BOD, COD of water bodies around Dhaka; Arsenic, Iron, Manganese, testing techniques. How to extract metals from soil/solid samples for testing.Corrosion in water supply and wastewater pipes and fixtures. Corrosion in MS bar in a cracked RCC section, Corrosion of metals in steel structures, cable stayed bridges, docs – in saline areas.
Course outcomes
1. Students will be able to be enriched with the knowledge of raw materials, manufacturing procedure, reactions and applications of binding material like cement
2. The maintenance and proper use of polymer in civil engineering will be ensured.
3. This course will increase student's awareness about environmental pollution and protection from industrial effluent.
4. Some specific examples of civil materials and their applications will be discussed to enhance skill of civil engineering.
