    This is Md. Abdullah Al Mamun, and I am here to conduct your new course 'Economics for Textile Engineers' and share and learn something new about the world of Economics for Textile Engineers. So, let's gather knowledge with you all together. Feel free to approach me any kind of problem.

    This course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the principles of economics and develop the students’ understanding on the important concept about economy in textile sectors especially the cost of textile materials and the cost to process them.

    General Course Description : 

    Course Title: Economics for Textile Engineers

    Course Code: HUM 333

    Credit Hours: 3 (Theory, 3 contact hours per week) 

    Prerequisite: None

    Course Level: Level 3 Term 1


    Course Objectives:

    • After completion of the course you will have an idea about the global textile economy.
    • They will learn about the leading exporters and importers of textile raw materials, products and machineries.
    • The detail ideas of textile sector of Bangladesh with emphasis on its competitor countries will be gained through this course.
    • The course will equip students about the current and future trend of textile product exported from Bangladesh.
    • They will also learn about SWOT of textile sector of Bangladesh.

    Expected Learning Outcomes

    On completion of the course the learners are expected to:

    • Summarize the definition and classification of dyes, mechanism of dyeing.
    • Summarize composition and properties of oil, fats and wax and the formulation and mechanism of action of detergents.
    • Describe different techniques of water purification.
    • Describe the properties of textile scouring and finishing chemicals.

    Other Skills Development

    • English communication skills.


    Course outline

    Chapter-1: Basic Economics : Importance of textile economics, Scope of economics in Textile and apparel sector of Bangladesh, Economic cycle, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics in term of textile sector, Textile economic system, Cost concept: Total cost, average cost, marginal cost, fixed cost and variable cost.

    Chapter-2: Concept of Demand and Supply : Demand and supply, time and supply, equilibrium, elasticity of demand, elasticity of supply. Market: monopoly and monopsony.

    Chapter-3: Export and Import of Raw Material : Leading exporters and importers of cotton, jute, wool, flax, silk, polyester and nylon etc. Global production and consumption of textile fibers with reference to volumes, prices and countries. Global Apparel Consumption.

    Chapter-4: Export and Import of Yarn, Fabric & Machinery : Study on local and imported yarns. A detailed account of various types of fabrics produced in Bangladesh. Present and future demand of woven and knitted fabrics for export oriented RMG. Economics of textile wet processes; dyeing, finishing and printing industries in Bangladesh. Dyes and chemical producing companies at home and abroad. Leading textile machineries producing countries. Global market of ready made garment of Bangladesh. Problems and prospects of various textile sub sectors; knit, woven and sweater etc.

    Chapter-5: Bangladesh Budget on Textile issues : Analysis of Bangladesh Budget, Textile budgets of neighboring and competitor countries.

    Chapter-6: Textile Market, Current & Future Trend : Current and future trend of textile and apparel sector of Bangladesh. Global textile market of Bangladesh. Comparative study of export and import of textile and apparel to Europe, America, UK, Australia, India, China etc.

      2. They also learn about law of demand & law of supply.
      3. Learn about Economic Equilibrium & Market Equilibrium
      4. Also learn about External Influences of equilibrium.

      1. Able to discuss about definition of Demand, Supply & Economic Equilibrium.

      1. To teach the students about the concepts and fundamentals different terms and definitions that are related to Economics.. 
      2. To learn about the Elastic demand.
      3. Learn about utility, total utility & marginal utility.
      4. Learn about inflation, its causes.
      5. To teach them about GDP, GNP, PPP, PCI etc.
