A firewall is a security system designed to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predefined security rules. It acts as a barrier between an internal network and external networks (such as the internet), and helps to protect the internal network from unauthorized access, malicious attacks, and other security threats.

Firewalls work by examining each packet of data that passes through the network, and comparing it to a set of predefined rules. If the packet matches a rule, it is allowed to pass through the firewall. If the packet does not match any rules, it is blocked or discarded. The rules can be based on a variety of criteria, such as the source or destination IP address, the type of protocol used, or the port number.

There are two main types of firewalls: software firewalls and hardware firewalls. Software firewalls are installed on individual devices, such as computers or servers, and protect only that specific device. Hardware firewalls, on the other hand, are physical devices that are placed at the boundary between the internal network and the internet, and protect the entire network.
