Scanning

Scanning is a reading technique in which a reader scans the page with their eyes in order to find specific information. It’s not necessary to read everything, instead, focus on finding particular details.

Example 1: Searching any year or a particular date in a big news article. Readers are need to scan through the article to find the specific number of the date.

Example 2: When reading a scientific article and we need to find the result of that scientific paper, so in this case we need to scan the paper to find the conclusion of the paper.

Skimming

Skimming is a reading technique in which a reader reads through the text quickly to see what it is about. The reader can read only the first line and the last line to understand the text or paragraph. Sometimes the reader can read more than one or two line to understand the topic clearly.

Example 1: When reading a newspaper article, we might skim the headlines, subheadings, and the first few sentences of each paragraph to get an idea of what the article is about without reading it word for word.

Example 2: Before buying a book, we skim through the first few pages, the table of contents, and the back cover to determine if the book is worthy to buy or not.
