Scanning : It's a technique often used when you need to find a particular piece of information, such as a name, date, or number.

        Example 1 :

          1. Find the phone number for a local pizza place in a restaurant guide.

  • Scanning: You would quickly run your eyes down the list of restaurants, focusing on the "Phone Number" column until you find the pizza place you're looking for.
  • Example 2:

  • Locate a specific recipe in a cookbook.

  • Scanning: You would scan the index or table of contents for the recipe name, then flip through the pages until you find the corresponding section.

Skimming : It's useful when you need to get a general overview of a topic or when you want to determine if a text is relevant to your needs.

Example 1 :

  •  Get a general understanding of a news article about a recent scientific discovery.
  • Skimming: You would read the headline, subheadings, and the first sentence of each paragraph to get a sense of the main points of the article.

Example 2:

  •  Decide if a book is worth reading based on its cover and summary.
  • Skimming: You would read the book's summary and perhaps a few sample chapters to see if the topic and writing style interest you.
