scanning.

Definition: Scanning is a way of looking through a text quickly to find specific information, like a word, name, or number, without reading everything.

Examples:

  • Looking for a Name in a Phone Book: You scan through the list of names quickly until you spot the one you need, ignoring the rest.
  • Finding a Date on a Calendar: You scan the calendar, moving your eyes over the dates until you find the one you are looking for.

Skimming

Examples:

  • Reading a News Story: You skim the article by checking the headlines and the first lines of each paragraph to get a general idea of the story.
  • Reviewing a Chapter in a Textbook: You skim by reading the introduction, the summary, and any bold or highlighted words to get tge key points.
