While practical reading of literature, literary theory is the method and tool of understanding the literature properly. 

Here are the 3 main points of 5 important literary theories which are mentioned below: 

1. Formalism or Russian Formalism:    *analyses the structure and literary device. 

                                                                  *no necessity of historical background. 

                                                                  *also known as stylistic approach. 

2. New Criticism:    *close reading of the text. 

                                 *diverse meaning, not surface meaning. 

                                 *no need for any historical background. 

3. Structuralism:    *it is the linguistic interpretation of the text. 

                                *things can not be understood in isolation. 

                                *understand the text through the larger context. 

4. Post-structuralism:    *rebellion against structuralism. 

                                         *text understood by isolation. 

                                         *not going through the broaden sense of the meaning of texts. 

5. Deconstruction:         *multiple layers of meaning. 

                                        *self-contradictory literary work. 

                                        *applied form of post-structuralism and introduced by Roland Barthes.
