                                            Scanning

Scanning is a reading technique used to search for specific information within a text, such as names, dates, or keywords. It involves moving your eyes quickly over the page to find what you are looking for without reading everything in detail.

  • Example 1: Looking for a date in a long news article about an event.
  • Example 2: Finding a specific word in a dictionary.

                                        Skimming

Skimming is a technique used to quickly understand the general idea or the main points of a text. When skimming, you read headings, subheadings, and the first sentences of paragraphs, or look for key ideas throughout the text.

  • Example 1: Skimming a book’s chapter to get the overall idea before a test.
  • Example 2: Glancing through a restaurant menu to decide quickly what to order.
