Scanning Definition: Scanning is the process of looking for specific information in a text without reading everything. You know what you're looking for (e.g., dates, names, keywords), and your eyes move quickly over the page to find it. Example 1: You're reading a newspaper article and you just want to know the score of a football match. You scan through the text to find the section that mentions the teams and their scores.
Example : You have a train timetable and you are only interested in knowing the departure time of the train to a specific city. You scan the timetable to find the name of the city and its corresponding departure time.
Skimming Definition: Skimming is reading quickly to get the general idea or gist of the text, without focusing on every detail. It’s useful for understanding the main points of a text quickly. Example 1: You're skimming a book's table of contents to decide if it contains the information you need for a research paper. You read the chapter titles and brief descriptions to get an overall sense of the book’s contents.
Example : You receive a long email but only need to get the main message. You skim through the email, focusing on headings and bolded text to grasp the general idea without reading each sentence closely.
