The alkanes have two main commercial sources: petroleum (crude oil) and natural gas. An alkyl group is an alkane-based molecular fragment that bears one open valence for bonding.

It can be produced by thermal cracking of ethane to produce ethene and a hydrogen molecule. Alkenes are the raw materials for a number of plastics such as polyethylene, PVC, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Alkene chemistry is found in unsaturated fats, beta-carotene, and seeing light through vision.

The main source of alkanes are petroleum and natural gas found in the crust of earth. They are formed by high temperature and pressure and under anaerobic conditions from the plants and organisms that were buried long time back. This is why petroleum and natural gas are known as fossil fuels.

Alkanes are hydrocarbons. So, the most important sources for alkanes are oil and natural gas. Apart from this, Alkenes are found in unsaturated fats, beta-carotene, and seeing light through vision.
