From the introductory sessions, I have learned a lot of theories in brief. Basically, we got three sessions on it where the whole topic of the syllabus were demonstrated to us shortly. Our course teacher introduced all these theories to us in such a way that we became very eager to learn all of these theories in detail. To me, this subject is going to be very interesting  because I like reading and thinking on theories.

Now I am going to mention three main points related to the definition and characteristics of five important theories.

1. Liberal Humanism:

  • Consider the significance of literature as timeless.
  • Study the text in isolation.
  • Imply the ruling assumptions as well as class distinctions.

2. Formalism or Russian Formalism:

  • Study the literary devices in the text and emphasising literary form.
  • Objective analysis of the literary work.
  • Analysis of the literary text by neglecting author, context, history etc.

3. Structuralism

  • Things have to be seen in the context of the larger structures because they can not be understood in isolation.
  • Interpret literature in terms of structure in language.
  • Study of the literature in terms of context, history, author etc with the structures of language.

4. Deconstruction:

  • Thinking about the text in a fragmented way as meaning is not constant.
  • Disagreeing with the existing norms and creating own meaning.
  • Self-contradictory

5. Ecocriticism:

  • Questining the relationship between nature and literature.
  • An earth centered approach to literary study.
  • Influence of nature in the literary text.
