The course is about“Literary theory”. Literary theory is the body of ideas and methods we use in the practical reading of literature. From this course, I can realize the importance of literature and different theories.

Now I am writing 5 different literary theories with three important points of each literary theory.

1. Formalism:

a) Involves a close reading of the text.

b) All information essential to the interpretation of a work must be found within the work itself.

c) Focuses on analyzing irony, paradox, imagery, and metaphor.

2. Psychoanalytical Approach:

a) Views works through the lens of psychology.

b) Looks either at the psychological motivations of the characters or of the authors themselves.

c) Most frequently applies Freudian psychology to works, but other approaches also exist.

3. Feminist Criticism:

a) Concerned with the roles of female characters within works.

b) May argue that gender determines everything, or just the opposite: that all gender differences are imposed by society, and gender determines nothing.

c) The practice of removing a female character who is no longer useful to the male characters.

4. Marxism:

a) Karl Marx perceived human history to have consisted of a series of struggles between classes--between the oppressed and the oppressing ("the haves" and "the have-nots").

b) Marx thought that materialism was the ultimate driving force in history.

c) Feudalism exploits workers to the point of revolt.

5. Post colonialism:

a) Meaning resides in text, history, and ideology.

b) Literature is a political tool-those in power decide what is "art".

c) Truth is relative .Study the author's (and reader's) life & times; locate tensions between conflicting cultures; explore the "double consciousness" of colonized & postcolonized writers; observe how colonizers

"refashion" the colonized.
