Here I’m Mentioning three main points that are related to the definition and characteristics of five most important theories. I have found the theories New Criticism, Structuralism, Deconstruction, Modernism, and Feminist Criticism of my liking.
New Criticism:
- New Criticism is a formalist movement in literary theory, and it emphasizes close reading of the text.
- New Critics believe that the structure and meaning of the text are intimately connected
- New criticism views the text as a 'unified whole'.
Structuralism:
- Structuralism is a 20th Century intellectual movement
- Structuralism holds the view that the structure is what determines the position of each element of a whole
- Structuralism emphasizes the context of the text
Deconstruction:- Deconstruction states that any given text has irreconcilably contradictory meanings
- Deconstruction invites us to re-examine/rethink between appearance and reality of the text
- Deconstruction views literature as fluid parts, not as a whole
Modernism:- Modernism is regarded as a cultural movement of the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
- Modernism rebels against clear-cut storytelling and formulaic verse
- Modernism mourns the loss of tradition and fragmentation
Feminist Criticism:- Deals commonly with female issues in traditional literature, but advocates for all gender
- This school of theory looks at how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal
- Aims to create a balanced critical landscape regarding the value of women
- Its ultimate goal to change the world by prompting gender equality
