    This course provides an insight on different techniques of wastewater management for both rural and urban settings. The major focus will be on basic design and management techniques of different wastewater management elements that are most suitable in warm and humid climates.

    Course Outcomes

    1. To learn the basics theories on the different treatment/ management techniques of sanitary sewage, sludge, storm water as well as industrial wastewater as depicted in the course description..

    2. To be able to select the proper sanitation option and to design appropriate low cost safe sanitation options for rural and urban localities.

    3. To be able to illustrate, evaluate and design the basic wastewater transportation system.
    4. To be able to explain the basic concepts of physical and microbial treatment of organic wastewater.

    5. To be able to design basic wastewater treatment system.

    Course Outline

    Contents:
    Wastewater Engineering: introduction, estimation of wastewater; wastewater collection systems; hydraulics of sewage; design, construction and managements of sanitary sewer and storm drainage system; sewer appurtenances; plumbing system
    Microbiology of wastewater, wastewater characteristics; wastewater treatment and disposal; treatment and disposal of industrial effluents; sludge treatment and disposal; sanitation and health; low cost sanitation technology; septic tank system.
    Sustainability of water and sanitation services; participatory development approach in water and sanitation sector; community management of water and sanitation services.

    Module 01Environmental Sanitation and Technological Options

    This will take 3 hrs. of active participation and 6 hrs. of self study. This will cover a) sanitation and health; b) low cost sanitation technology 

    Objectives

    To learn about the relation between sanitation and health. Why and how the health engineering projects are undertaken by authorities. Learn basics of sanitation and sanitary technologies in practice. This module also covers design problems of rural sanitary technologies.

    Outcomes

    LO 1: Student can explain the relation between sanitation and health
    LO 2: Student can explain the reasons of health engineering projects being sponsored by authorities.
    LO 3: Student can explain the pathways of diseases transmission and how sanitation is related.
    LO 4: Students can classify different kind of sanitation technology
    LO 5: Students can design rural sanitation technology for households.
    LO 6: Students can select the most appropriate settings for sanitary toilets to address environmental issues (flood level, ground water pollution)

    This will take 6 hrs. of active participation and 12 hrs. of self study. This will cover basic design parameters of wastewater transportation system 

    Objectives

    To learn about Estimation of wastewater;
    To learn about wastewater collection/transportation systems;
    To learn about the hydraulics of sewage;  and 
    learn basic design technique of sewer pipes
    To learn about the construction and management of Sanitary sewer and Storm drainage system; Sewer Appurtenances.
    To learn about Small Bore Sewer System (SBS)

    Students can  estimate municipal wastewater generation
    Students can identify and justify the need of different types of sewer systems in a locality
    Students can design different parts of the sewer plumbing (stacks, building drain)
    Students can identify and explain different components of municipal sewer system
    Students can design sewer pipe dimensions for different condition.

    • May have to answer five questions out of six for 40 marks in total.
    • Each question may have sub-sets like a, b, c.
    • Questions will be such that those can judge the skills achieved by the student, matching the target course/module outcomes.
    • Question will generally target higher order cognitive skills like analysis, design, comparison etc.
    • Student will get 150 minutes to answer all questions.
