Case Study-chapter-2

Kumar works as a plant superintendent in a carpet making factory. In order to complete the export orders on time, the production manager asks him to make the workers work over time whereas the finance manager is strictly against this practice because it will increase the cost of production. Moreover, Kumar feels that since the company is manufacturing handmade carpets as well as machine made carpets there is a lot of overlapping of activities. Therefore, there should be two separate divisions for both of them wherein each division should have its own in charge, plans and execution resources.

In context of the above case:

1.     Identify and explain the principle of management which is being violated.

The violation of management principle is equal opportunity as far as I think because one boss is just the opposite of another boss. Production manager want to make the production in time but the financial manager is not agreeing with him because of money it is carpet manufacturing company and hand made and machine made carpet is a lot of overlapping of activities. Management thinks of equal opportunity and worker benefit bet the rules is violated hare.

Unity of Command . Each subordinate should receive orders from one superior.
Authority. The right or power to give orders to subordinates is authority. Wherever authority exists, responsibility arises.
Division of work . Output can be increased by specialization, making employees more efficient.

The principle of management which is being violated in the carpet making factory are:
1. Division of Work – When employees are specialized, output can increase because they become increasingly skilled and efficient.
2. Unity of Direction – Teams with the same objective should be working under the direction of one manager, using one plan. This will ensure that action is properly coordinated.
3.Equity – Managers should be fair to staff at all times, both maintaining discipline as necessary and acting with kindness where appropriate.
4. Initiative – Employees should be given the necessary level of freedom to create and carry out plans.

the principle of management which is being violated:
Unity of Command: There should be one and only one boss for every individual employee. Dual subordination should be avoided. Fayol felt that if this principle is violated, “authority is undermined, discipline is in jeopardy, order disturbed and stability threatened”.
Unity of direction: All the units of an organization should be moving towards the same objectives through coordinated and focused efforts. Each group of activities having the same objective must have one head and one plan. This will lead to unity of action and coordination.

In this case  the violation of the principle of management is division of work and equity. In this case we can see that the production manager try to increase the working hour whereas the finance manager is against of it.

Division of work is when employees are specialized, output can increase because they become increasingly skilled and efficient.

Equity is managers should be fair to staff at all times, both maintaining discipline as necessary and acting with kindness where appropriate.

In this case Unity of direction is being violented. Unity of direction means there should be different division for different activities, so if this company has separate production unit and finance unite they may avoid the conflict between this two division.

In this case the principle which is violated in unity of direction because in an organisation it’s very important to have separate groups of each section otherwise everyone’s decision can make chaotic situation in organisation. Financial manager should manage only the financial section, they should not involve in production section. and same rules is for production group.

The principle of management which is being violated Unity of Command:
Unity of command provides that an employee is responsible to only one supervisor, who in turn is responsible to only one supervisor, and so on up the organizational hierarchy. While the board of directors of your company governs the policy making and strategic planning, under the concept of unity of command, you do not answer to all members of the board, but only the chairman of the board.

Every Organization should have to take separate divisions for both of them wherein each division should have its own in charge, plans and execution resources. But we can see that the manager can not execute of her decision for finance manager. Their finance manager finance manager violets the management rules here.

According to the case it's identify that here violated the principles of administrative management specifically division of work & unity of command. When employees are specialized, output can increase because they become increasingly skilled and efficient. But in this case the manufacturing of handmade carpets and machine made carpet produce together, those overlaps the activities.
On the other hand in this case also violate the principle of unity of command cause here production manager want to workers work overtime on the other hand financial manager found it as a increase of cost. So, here workers face a dilemma.

The violation is unity of command. According to the principle of unity of command, an employee must answer to only one superior, example as there should be one and only one boss for every individual employee. If he is to follow the commands of more than one superior there will be confusion and dissatisfaction of both the superiors.

Identify the principles of management violated in the following cases and explain them.

(i) a manager, speaks to people at all levels, including his as well as other departments.

(ii) a manager, expects his subordinates to work for personal satisfaction and contentment, without any monetary reward.

(iii) a manager, expects that his subordinate produces instant results, without giving him sufficient time to settle in the new environment.
