The Supreme Court of Bangladesh is the highest judicial authority in the country. It is responsible for interpreting the Constitution, adjudicating legal disputes, and safeguarding the fundamental rights and liberties of the citizens. The Supreme Court is composed of two divisions: the Appellate Division and the High Court Division.

  1. Appellate Division: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is the highest court of appeal in Bangladesh. It primarily hears appeals from judgments and orders of the High Court Division. It consists of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh and a maximum of six other judges. The decisions of the Appellate Division are binding and have precedential value.

  2. High Court Division: The High Court Division of the Supreme Court is the court of original jurisdiction and deals with various types of cases, including constitutional matters, writ petitions, criminal cases, and civil cases. It has the power to issue writs for the enforcement of fundamental rights and to exercise judicial review over the actions of the government and other authorities. The High Court Division consists of a Chief Justice and a maximum of 99 other judges.

The Chief Justice of Bangladesh is the head of the judiciary and is appointed by the President of Bangladesh. Other judges of the Supreme Court are also appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Chief Justice and in consultation with the other judges.
