In recent years, Bangladesh made significant strides in public health, notably increasing life expectancy and reducing child mortality. However, challenges persist, such as low government health spending (0.74% of GDP), high out-of-pocket costs, and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, which now account for 61% of the disease burden. Natural disasters, poverty, climate change, and resource constraints further complicate healthcare delivery. Additionally, the country faces a humanitarian crisis with 671,000 Rohingya refugees since 2017.The healthcare sector, valued at USD 6.76 billion in 2018, is growing at an annual rate of 10.3%, encompassing hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and telemedicine. NGOs play a crucial role in providing care, but the public system remains hindered by inefficiency and underfunding. Key public health figures include Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (founder of BRAC), Zafrullah (global health advocate), and Dr. Nazneen Akhter (bioethics expert). To sustain improvements, Bangladesh requires greater investment and better resource allocation. Healthcare in Bangladesh faces significant challenges, including limited government funding (3% of GDP) and high out-of-pocket expenses (66%), leading to inequality. Issues such as a low doctor-patient ratio, inadequate hospitals, and unregulated pharmacies hinder public health. Poor health awareness, insufficient preventive care, and high population density exacerbate the situation. Communicable diseases, poor nutrition, unsafe food, and inadequate hygiene contribute to high mortality rates. Solutions involve improving health awareness, family planning, hygiene, water access, vaccination, non-communicable disease management, and strengthening primary healthcare for long-term improvements.
