    Summary of the Lesson

Human communication is a distinct discipline of knowledge. It has its own enriched academic areas and practical fields. Various types of research are carried out in this discipline. For example, audience research is an important area of communication studies. Audience perception on overall design and content of a news media is frequently conducted by the popular media outlets. In Bangladesh, such study is carried out to comprehend the audience perspectives. Based on the audience needs and suggestions, content of a particular media is designed and redesigned.

Audience profile is also explored to understand the need for content diversification of a news media. Audience profile helps to figure out socio-demographic factors of the audience. Such studies facilitate the media managers to understand diversified taste and interest of media. Audience study can be carried out based on a national sampling, regional or local population or on a particular group of people.

Most audience research is directed towards answering the above general questions. Some of them, of course, are more than one question. In fact, some of those questions can be split into more precise ones.

Media effect is also an important area of communication research. This type of research helps to comprehend effects of different media on different types of audience. For example, a particular TV cartoon program might have strong effect on the behavior of the children. From the observation, some of the Indian cartoon programs have contributed to children’s language learning behavior in Bangladesh. TV programs have strong effects on the children since the children imitate from whatever they watch. The children, however, by nature cannot distinguish what is proper and what is improper, what is right and what is wrong of a program. In many cases, the children imitate many aspects of a TV program whatever the content is. Bandura and Walter (1963) show in their studies how the children’s behavior is changed due to televised programs of violence.

Not only the children, planned and purposive communication interventions contribute to behavioral change of the audience. For example, many people are now adopting use of contraceptives due to awareness created by the communication interventions.

Media content is an important aspect of communication research. A very well practiced method has evolved to carry out the media content which is called ‘Content Analysis Method’. The content analysis of a communication media helps us to understand the dynamics of content presentation on a specified subject or area of media coverage. In order to map out the communication needs of a particular community, needs assessment study is carried out.

Perception study is carried out to capture the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the audience so that the perspectives, satisfaction and opinion of the targeted audience can be assessed. Such survey can be carried out on the audience through representative sampling procedure.

Audience research is very important especially for the advertising agencies to target the right audience. As all of the media messages are produced by keeping the target audience in mind, audience research is necessary to produce the proper message. If audience does not take interest in the designed message of a media, then it is of no value.

    • Content and Discourse Analysis Method

      Summary of the Lesson

Content analysis is a scholarly approach of studying the content of media materials and messages.  Content analysis can be carried out on news, articles, features, editorials, columns, post-editorials, photographs, documentary etc. ‘Content analysis’ is a specific research approach used frequently in all the areas of the media study. The method is popular with mass media researchers because it is an efficient way to investigate the content of the media.

Discourse analysis is a methodology for analyzing social phenomena that is qualitative, interpretive, and constructionist. It explores how the socially constructed ideas and objects are created and used in the media content. Discourse analysis is a qualitative method adopted and developed by social constructionists with a view to understanding the politics of styles, structures and languages of communication. Media, as social institutions, can limit social discourse through representation. Discourse analysis engages in explaining how a social group is represented on a particular issue. Discourse analysis focuses on media text and tries to explain how the text constructs the social reality. It deals with tools and techniques of the media used for emphasizing or deemphasizing an individual or a group by using metaphors, words, imposing images and so on.
