    Welcome to the Research Methodology Course


    This course will help students to understand the basic concepts of research. It will particularly familiarize students with the process of research with relation to Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching. They will know different theories of research and how to apply them to the production of a research report or paper. With the theoretical knowledge gained through this course, they will be equipped to undertake any research initiative themselves and complete it confidently.

    Dr. Md. Mostafa Rashel, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Department of English, and The founding Director of the Center for Ethnic Minority Languages and Research (CEMLR), Daffodil International University, has achieved a prestigious Ph.D. Degree in Linguistics from the Department of Languages and Linguistics at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia for his comprehensive research work on endangered language documentation of Bangladesh under the supervision of Emeritus Professor David Bradley and Associate Prof. Stephen Morey (Co-supervisor). Dr. Rashel wrote a grammatical description of the Tripura (Usoi) language concentrating on Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax as his doctoral dissertation: titled ‘A Grammar of Tripura’, is the first comprehensive grammar written on the Tripura language. Presently Dr. Rashel is only the expert on endangered language documentation in Bangladesh based on the corpus of naturalistic data analysis. He also engages with various national and international indigenous language documentation and developmental education projects. His university teaching and research experience span more than thirteen years in the field of linguistics. He has expertise on documenting endangered indigenous languages in Bangladesh based on the analysis of naturalistic data corpora using linguistic software applications such as Field Language Explorer (FLEX), PRAAT, Phonology Assistant, ELAN, and Toolbox. He has also worked on other endangered indigenous languages of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), including Marma and Mro. He compiled three primers (Pre-Primary School Textbook) devoted to six languages Santali and Sadri, Hajong and Garo, Patro and Khasi. He has archived endangered language data with the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC) at the University of Sydney, Australia. Additionally, He has conducted workshops and seminars on language documentation at Bangladeshi universities and at the International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) to encourage Bangladeshi linguists to study minority languages.

  •  Course Objectives:

    ·   To help students to understand what is research with relation to ELT.

    ·   To help them to distinguish between qualitative and quantitative research.

    ·   To help them to understand how to choose a research topic and write a research paper in ELT field.


    Course Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, students will be able to:

    • Define and classify research. 
    • Understand reference styles and formal writing.
    • Write a research proposal and go for implementation.
    • Collect and analyse data for quantitative research. 
    • Understand the structure of a research paper in ELT.
    • Write a research paper for publication.
