  • Introduction to the course: Development Issues and Communication


    Course Summary  

    This course will facilitate the students with necessary understanding and skills to think of, design and conduct various communication and development projects, strategic communication/campaign plan. The students will be able to fit communication approaches in the fields of socio-economic development.   The course will deal with established theories ad practices of social marketing techniques and Behavior Change Communication Model including designing and implementing strategic communication plans. 

    Objectives of the Course 

    This course will focus on the areas of established theories and classical researches, case studies, approaches and strategies of development communication with particular references from Bangladesh. The course will also  emphasize on various approaches of development communication with their historical emergence and  expansion, community development approaches, experiences and established schools of development communication.

    Course Outcome

    After completion of this course, the students will have a broad understanding of communication tools, approaches and messages that can be applied for bringing qualitative changes in the life of the people. The students will be able to design communication strategies for socio-economic development projects. The students will be able to design and implement advocacy,  awareness and behaviour change communication programmes to impart information, education, motivation and knowledge among the people.

    -To make the students understand the definition and scope of development communication

    -To orient the students with the definition of famous scholars in the field of development communication

    The students, after the completion of the session, will be able to:

    -Will be able to provide with practical examples of development communication in Bangladesh and other countries

  • Lecture Two: Founding Philosophy

    Lecture Objective: 

    -To facilitate the understanding of how development communication emerged as an academic discipline

    -  Make the students understand the trends of emergence of development communication in different regions 

    -Find the logical model of philosophy of development communication

    At the end, the students will be able to understand different philosophical grounds of development communication and choose the best options.

  • Lecture Three: Evolution of thoughts on development communication

    Lecture Objective:

    -To orient the students with the scholastic thoughts of  development in various era

    -To choose the better options of thoughts of development for Bangladesh

    -get an idea of development concepts that arose globally in different times

    -can argue for the better options for Bangladesh and they can advocate through their writing and work.

    At the end of the session, the students will be able to learn about various tools and platforms of development communication. In addition to that, they will be able to choose suitable tools and platforms of development communication for a development project.

  • Lecture 5 - Monologic and dialogic communication

    Lecture objective

    -To provide the students with an understanding of monologic and dialogic forms of communication

    -To make them understand which form of human communication is suitable for development communication

    At the end of the session, the students will be able to choose the appropriate form of communication in designing and implementing their development project.

  • Assignment

    Students need to develop a plan on how to cover an issue of development communication for publishing in a news media i.e. TV, YouTube, Newspaper and Online Portal:

    Step 1: Selecting an area/topic of the report/coverage
    Step 2: Information that you have by this time and the information you need to gather
    Step 3: Which information will be collected from which/what sources
    Step 4: Audio-visual coverage plan
    Step 5: Information gathering/video capturing/photo snapping
    Step 6: Editing the draft report/production


  • Instruction for midterm examination

    Questions & Marks

    The midterm examination will be conducted in 25 marks. Midterm examination will be held covering lectures from one to six. Both the broad and short type of questions will be given on the topics covered.

  • Lesson 07- Diffusion of Innovation

    Sharing info on an innovation with the community people is an effective interpersonal approach


    Objectives of the Lecture

    Ø  To orient the students with the theoretical understanding of  an innovation spreads over time

    Ø  To facilitate understanding of the students on the communication channels that contribute to spread information on innovation

    Ø  To make the students understand the socio-cultural settings in which an innovation is adopted or rejected

    Ø  To impart the decision adoption process model

     Lesson outcome

    Ø  At the end of the lesson, the students will know how an innovation spreads over time in a particular socio-economic setting.

    Ø  The students could be able to design appropriate  communication channels for disseminating information to the diversified audiences

    Considering natural aspect in sustainable development is vital


    Lesson Objectives

    • To impart the students theoretical understanding of sustainable development

    • To orient them with the sustainable development goals (SDGs)

    • To make them able to incorporate SDGs in any development scheme

    • To increase capacity of advocacy on SDGs

    At the end of the session the students will:

    Ø  develop understanding on theoretical and historical perspectives of sustainable development

    Objective of the Lesson
