Assignment (Part-1 & Part-2) Spring-2024

Title of the Assignment:

A Phonetic description of ________ (e.g., Noakhali, Barisal) dialect.

General instruction for assignments:

In this course, we will take two assignments. Students must submit two assignments to get full marks. Note that this assignment contains two parts  (Part-1: General description of the dialect and Part-2: Phonetic description of the dialect). So Part 1 will be considered Assignment-1 and Part 2 will be considered Assignment-2).

What do you need to do?

First, you should write a short description of your dialect. You can find necessary information from Banglapedia (https://en.banglapedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page) or other sources (please search Google).

Second, find some words for minimal pairs in your dialect and decide how many phonemes exist in the dialect. Phonemes (consonants and vowels) will be fixed in a phoneme chart following the IPA chart (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/IPA_chart_2020.svg ). The next step will be to write a phonetic description according to the produced phoneme chart. Note that for writing the phonetic description of consonants, you must describe the place and manner of articulation of the consonant phonemes and voicing. To describe vowel phonemes, you should follow three things: rounding, height, and backness. 

Finally, please write a good conclusion and submit it to the BLC portal.
