Hacktivism is defined as the use of computers, networks, and other people's computers for socially or politically motivated purposes.

For instance, in 1971, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created a phone hack that allowed individuals to make free long distance calls; nevertheless, the hack from 1989 was one of the first to clearly express a political bent, which would later serve to define the word.
