An Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a security mechanism that actively blocks or prevents malicious activity, whereas a Honeypot is a decoy system designed to attract attackers and monitor their activities. While IPS complements other security measures like firewalls and antivirus software to provide a comprehensive defense against cyber threats, Honeypots are used to detect, deflect, or study attempts to unauthorized access or exploit an organization's information systems. Both IPS and Honeypots provide valuable insights into the tactics, techniques, and procedures used by attackers, allowing organizations to improve their security posture and prevent future attacks. However, Honeypots can be a liability if not properly secured, whereas IPS can actively prevent attacks before they can cause damage.
