Alternative Dispute Resolution, as it is known now,
originated in England as early as 1066. To settle private conflicts, English
citizens held their own informal court. These casual gatherings were frequently
led by respected male members of the community.
Mediation, bargaining, and arbitration are examples of
modern ADR procedures that have been widely embraced in legal systems around the
world.
Formalized ADR was
established in Bangladesh in June 2000 through court-annexed judicial
settlement pilot projects.
