The legal history of ancient India during the Hindu period is marked by the development of Dharmashastra, a body of legal and ethical guidelines. Manusmriti, attributed to Manu, is one of the most well-known Dharmashastra texts. It covered various aspects of law, governance, and social conduct, providing a framework for justice and societal order. The legal system was intertwined with religious principles, and caste-based norms played a significant role. Local self-governance through assemblies (Sabhas and Samitis) was also prevalent.
