A Hindu is a person who follows Hinduism, a major world religion that originated on the Indian subcontinent and comprises various systems of philosophy, belief, and ritual. Hinduism is the oldest living religion on Earth, and has over 1 billion followers worldwide, with about 95% of Hindus living in India. Hinduism has no single founder but developed gradually over a period of time, and has diverse roots and traditions. Hinduism prescribes eternal duties such as honesty, refraining from injuring living beings, patience, forbearance, self-restraint, virtue, and compassion, among others.Hinduism also teaches the concepts of karma (action, intent and consequences) and saṃsāra (cycle of death and rebirth), and the goals of human life, such as dharma (ethics/duties), artha (prosperity/work), kama (desires/passions) and moksha (liberation/freedom from the cycle of death and rebirth).
