- Pre-Vedic period: Indus Valley Civilization and local pre-historic religions (ending around 1750 BCE) .
- Vedic period: Introduction of the historical Vedic religion with the Indo-Aryan migrations (between 1900 BCE and 1400 BCE) .
- Formative period (800 BCE - 200 BCE): A turning point between the Vedic religion and Hindu religions, and a formative period for Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
- Classical period (200 BCE - 1200 CE): Flourishing of classical Hinduism.
- Gupta Empire (320 CE - 550 CE): Promotion of Hinduism as a unifying religion.
- Late-classical period (650 CE - 1200 CE) .
- Medieval period (1200 CE - 1500 CE) .
- Early modern period (1500 CE - 1850 CE) .
