Multiplexing (or muxing) is a way of sending multiple signals or streams of information over a communications link at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal; the receiver recovers the separate signals, a process called demultiplexing (or demuxing).

The advantages of multiplexing are:
(i)It boost the economic scalability of networks, as it lowers both the cost and the time needed for the deployment of the physical medium, as a single medium can serve multiple signals / subscribers / applications.
(ii)It boosts the technical efficiency of the medium, as it exploits resources that a single signal would leave idle.
