Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issueA

Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of violence, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.

Effects can be both direct/ indirect

Direct: anxiety, fear, mistrust of others, inability to concentrate, loneliness, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, suicide, etc. 

Indirect: psychosomatic illnesses, withdrawal, alcohol or drug use.

Economic and Social Impact

Rejection, exclusion and social stigma at community level;

Reduced ability to participate in social and economic activities;

Acute fear of future violence, which extends beyond the individual survivors to other members in community;

Nearly 21 million people are victims of human trafficking worldwide.
