    Course Outline

    The aim of this course is to focus on tourism planning as a process and set of techniques for sustainable tourism development. It examines the physical environment of tourism planning and the social, cultural, and political realities of tourism planning and policy-making. Public and private sector roles are evaluated, as well as nature, parameters, and constraints attached to tourism development. The emphasis of this course will be on strategic regional and community–based tourism planning.

    • Course Rationale

      Students will develop an understanding of tourism policy-making processes, and to gain skills in the evaluation of tourism plans and policies. The course follows the principles of sustainable tourism and broadens the coverage of planning and development to include tourism policy as well.

    • Course objectives

      1. To understand the basics of planning and tourism planning as a process and as a set of techniques for sustainable tourism development and measure the different impacts of Tourism.

      2. To focus on the physical environment of tourism planning, social, cultural and political realities of planning and policymaking.

      3. To evaluate the role of Public and private sector, parameters and constraints relating to tourism development in specific settings and carrying capacity of the tourism destination.

      4. Additional aims of the course are to develop an understanding of tourism policy-making processes, sustainable tourism development, and to gain skills in both evaluation and development of tourism plans and policies.

      After completing this course the students will able to know:

      • The ability to define and explain relevant concepts such as tourism planning, tourism public policy and development.
      • Identify key stakeholders involved in tourism planning and policy-making and devise a mechanism for engagement.
      • The ability to understand and critically analyze tourism planning and policy issues and documents.
      •  An understanding and assessment of government and industry roles and responsibilities in tourism planning and policy-making.
      • The ability to critique key tourism policy and planning approaches and models.
