Yellow corn contains various pigments and primarily xanthophylls and some zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthanin and their concentration in the human blood is the visual color of egg yolks and skin by xanthophyll sources. These substances are interesting because they accumulate in the macular.

Xanthophylls are yellow-brown pigments that absorb blue light.

Their function is to absorb blue light to protect the plants and algae from photodamage and absorb the light energy for use in photosynthesis. In the eye, lutein and zeaxanthin are xanthophylls that protect the macula from blue and ultraviolet (UV)-light damage.
