According to the definition the World Health Organization , Exclusive breastfeeding is the situation in which an infant receives only breast milk from mother or a wet nurse for the first 6 months and no other solids or liquids with the exception of drops or syrups consisting of vitamins, minerals, supplements, or medicines.
The importance of exclusive breastfeeding :
Breastmilk is made up of almost 90% water, along with the fats, proteins, carbohydrates and micronutrients babies need to grow. It also contains other components, such as antibodies, antioxidants, growth factors, and hormones. Antibodies and other immune molecules in breastmilk are believed to play an essential role in the protection of babies from infections. Exclusive Breastfeeding also has some health benefits for the breastfeeding mother. In the short term, breastfeeding helps support quicker recovery after delivery. The hormone oxytocin, which is produced during breastfeeding, causes the uterus to contract, bringing it back to its original size and reduces the amount of bleeding after birth . Breastfeeding protects against diarrhoea and common childhood illnesses such as pneumonia, and may also have longer-term health benefits for the mother and child, such as reducing the risk of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence. Exclusive breastfeeding means that the infant receives only breast milk. That's the reason new born baby should continue exclusive Brest feeding till the age of 6 months.
