Hindu law didn't have a single system of exemptions. Traditionally, fairness (Dharma) mattered. People with mental issues, acting in self-defense, minors, or those forced to commit crimes might be excused. Religious acts, under some conditions, could also be exempt from punishment. But serious crimes like murder still had consequences.
