Legal history, or the history of law, is the study of how law has evolved and why it has changed. It is closely linked to the development of civil society and operates within the broader context of social history. Some jurists and historians view legal history as documenting the evolution of laws and explaining their development to better understand the origins of various legal concepts, while others see it as a branch of intellectual history.
