Depth cueing is one of the well known methods in 3D computer graphics  to represent 3D objects on a 2D space. It is possible to use the reverse of depth cueing to extract the 3D coordinates from 2D images. Depth cues are features of visual presentations which promote perception of depth

Depth cueing can be used for many rendering effects such as fog, haze, mist but can also be used to render some sorts of water. It can also be used for the effect that objects farther away from the viewer get darker with increasing distance.
